My Juneau Cruise Port Experience
An unusually sunny day in Juneau with amazing whale watching, a quick look at Mendenhall Glacier and a delicious salmon bake.
Our Juneau Day in August 2026
Juneau ended up being one of the best days of our Alaska cruise aboard Norwegian Encore. We went whale watching, stopped briefly near Mendenhall Glacier and finished with a salmon bake.
The weather made the day even better. Juneau is not exactly famous for endless sunshine, but we had an unusually beautiful day. It was very sunny and almost warm.
The Weather Could Not Have Been Much Better
We knew rain was always possible in Southeast Alaska, so the bright sunshine was a very welcome surprise. It was warm enough that the day felt comfortable without taking away from the fact that we were surrounded by mountains, cold water and Alaska scenery.
Our weather was unusually good and should not be treated as a forecast for someone else's visit. Juneau conditions can change quickly, so I would still bring layers and a water-resistant jacket even if the morning looks promising.
The Whale Watching Was Absolutely Amazing
Whale watching was the highlight of our Juneau visit. We saw the kind of activity I had hoped for when we booked an Alaska cruise, and we came home with some great video.
A whale surfaced less than 25 yards away
At one point, a whale unexpectedly surfaced less than 25 yards from us. Seeing one from a distance is impressive. Having one suddenly appear that close is something completely different. It gave us an immediate sense of just how large these animals are.
That close encounter does not mean a whale-watching boat should approach a humpback at that distance. Federal rules in Alaska require vessels not to approach within 100 yards or position themselves in the path of a whale. Whales, however, do not follow the boat's itinerary and can surface unexpectedly nearby. Our experience was a reminder that wildlife sightings are real, unscripted and never guaranteed.
Our Quick Stop at Mendenhall Glacier
On the way to the salmon bake, we stopped near Mendenhall Glacier long enough to see it and grab a quick video. It was not a full Mendenhall Glacier excursion, and I do not want to pretend that we explored the visitor center, walked the trails or spent hours in the recreation area.
What I can honestly say: We saw Mendenhall Glacier, got a quick video and appreciated having it included in our Juneau day. What I cannot offer is a complete review of the visitor center or the surrounding trails because we did not experience them.
Mendenhall Glacier is approximately 13 miles from downtown Juneau and the cruise docks, so it can fit naturally into a broader Juneau excursion. Travelers who want to explore the area in depth should book enough time for the visitor center, viewpoints and any trails they intend to use.
Finishing the Day With a Salmon Bake
After the whale watching and our quick Mendenhall stop, we continued to a salmon bake. The salmon was delicious and it felt like the right way to finish a day in Juneau.
Sometimes a combination excursion can feel like it is rushing through a checklist. This one did not feel that way to me. Whale watching was clearly the main event, Mendenhall gave us another distinctly Alaskan sight along the way, and the salmon bake gave us a chance to sit down and enjoy the food after being out on the water.
Was Our Juneau Excursion Worth It?
Absolutely
The whale watching alone made the excursion worthwhile. Add the sunshine, the brief Mendenhall Glacier stop and the salmon bake, and Juneau became one of the standout port days of our cruise.
I would recommend a similar combination to someone who wants to experience several sides of Juneau without trying to coordinate separate transportation and reservations. Just pay attention to how much time the itinerary actually provides at Mendenhall. Our stop was brief, which was fine for us, but it would not satisfy someone whose main priority is hiking or spending substantial time at the glacier.
What to Know Before Whale Watching in Juneau
- Wildlife is never guaranteed. Our experience was amazing, but another sailing may see different behavior or fewer whales.
- Bring layers. Even on our sunny, almost-warm day, conditions on the water could feel different from conditions near the ship.
- Keep your camera ready. A whale may surface and disappear before you have time to unlock your phone.
- Do not experience the entire trip through a screen. We captured great video, but some moments are worth watching with your own eyes.
- Understand the viewing rules. Boats must maintain required distances and avoid interfering with whales, although a whale can choose to surface closer.
- Compare combination-tour timing. If Mendenhall Glacier is a major priority, verify whether the stop is a quick viewpoint or a longer visit.
